Polka, beer, and brats. It's Maifest at Milwaukee's Estabrook Park Beer Garden this weekend. We stopped by for the opening festivities on Thursday evening and enjoyed a little German tradition. Free pours of Hofbrau Maibock were offered for the first hour of the festival—but not before the brew was blessed by a priest, of course. Ahh, Milwaukee.

The tent was booming with the sound of live music from The Brewhouse Polka Kings, bustling conversation, and clinking steins. After enjoying a little German fare at our lively communal table, it was time for masskrugstemmen—the stein holding competition. Both men and women competed and the winner held out for a little under 6 minutes—turns out it's easier to drink the stuff than hold it.

Maifest continues through the weekend and will be featuring more live Polka, German dance performances, and of course, beer. More details at

Kickapoo Coffee

Making its debut this weekend amongst Milwaukee's growing coffee scene is Kickapoo Coffee Roasters. They've been roasting coffee in the Kickapoo Valley in Viroqua, WI but just opened their first Milwaukee cafe at 232 E. Erie Street in the Third Ward. Today's the grand opening so be to sure to stop by. We loved the clean, bright, and open aesthetic of the cafe, not to mention the Ethiopian Worka pour over.
